Tuesday night’s Devon Bowl game is an intriguing tie, with the Dartmoor side’s manager being our former Assistant Manager Ben Gerring and other familiar faces are part of a strong group that he has assembled.
Despite the Yellows’ parting company with Leigh Robinson and Ben Gerring a short way into last season, it’s easy to forget that under their stewardship in the 2023/24 campaign that they navigated us to safety, after a troublesome period in that season and provided the fans’ with many memorable moments.
Gerring’s results at the helm with Bovey Tracey havebeen impressive and with Tiverton’s former manager Leigh Robinson on hand to lend advice, Western League football appears to beckon. Earlier in the season they oversaw a great run in the FA Vase.
The Moorlander’s had sat at the top of the South West Peninsula League Premier East for virtually the whole season, but their closest rival’s Bridport took over top spot and then defeated Bovey 7-6, in a thrilling encounter a few week’s back. It’s now a Two horse race, with Gerring’s side having games in hand. At the weekend they overcame Bishop’s Lydeard 4-1.
The word legend is banded about much too frequently without substance, but those that remember fondly will know, that legendary status is correctly afforded to our former Striker Levi Landricombe whose extensive collection of goals and inspirational forward play will always be a rich part of the club’s history.
Making 180 appearances for the Yellows’ and scoring a phenomenal 124 times, 36 Year old Landricombe also wore the colours of Plymouth Parkway at the beginning of his senior career and had a second spell there. In recent year’s he was with Exmouth Town and despite injury hit seasons still maintained a decent goalscoring record. Used mainly as an impact sub these days, he will be sure to receive a warm reception from the travelling support if he is involved.
A previous mainstay at Bovey Ollie Aplin has returned to Mill Marsh Park, the team’s home, following a spell with Wellington. Notching his 100th goal for the club during this season as part of a hatrick against Axminster in an 8-1 humbling.
Much travelled target man Stuart Bowker who has good statistics in the Western League has Willand, Bideford, Helston and Barnstaple on his CV amongst other’s and is a strong sportsman, being a talented cricketer.
Forward option’s were strengthened with the dual registration of Craig Duff from Tavistock. The veteran target-man joining the cause in recent week’s and he has notable pedigree. The former Weymouth, Truro, Taunton, Bideford and Willand player has always been a strong leader of the line and has plenty of attacking nous.
Winger Josh Webber brings excellent pedigree to Ben Gerring’s side. Previously with Bideford, the talented wideman has also played for Willand and Buckland.Defender Owen Stockton is another ex Buckland player who is a proven performer in the Western League and similarly has Southern League experience withBideford.
Josh Searle is a dual registration with Willand. The ex Tiverton and Taunton defender has vast experience, plying his trade at The Stan Robinson Stadium for Nine seasons’. His involvement will depend on whether he turned out for Willand in an earlier round.
The promising Jack Brimming will provide a creative spark for The Moorlanders. The fan favourite often catches the eye. Between the stick’s will be Dom Aplin the brother of Ollie.
This game will give Asa Hall and his coaching staff a chance to take stock and assess his existing squad.giving opportunities to fringe players and member’s of our talented U18 side. It’s been an impressive run in this competition, but despite the differing standard’s of football that these team’s compete in, this should be a hugely competitive cup tie.
