Weston-Super-Mare v Tiverton Town Report

Before his brace today, Matt Wright’s last competitive goal for the Yellows came in a 2-1 win over Fleet Town on the 26th April 2014, some 2,683 days ago!

The Yellows clearly wanting to put last Saturday’s defeat behind them, started brightly and in the opening few minutes won a corner however Purnell was able to comfortably collect. Tiverton continued to be a threat and on 12 minutes a cross by Lam found Wright at the back post but headed straight to the keeper.

The hosts were quickly wakened by the visitors early pressure and the next 15 minutes or so Tiverton’s defence were made to work hard, especially on ‘18 when Jagger-Canes cross/shot was clipped goalwards, Woodman did brilliantly to clear it off the line. A few moments later, Williams with a fine save pushing it past his post from a Laird strike heading for the top corner.

Mccootie who continued to be a threat all afternoon was unlucky not to open the scoring just before the half hour mark, spinning his defender but only able to prod his shot at a charging Williams. A forced change was made by the Yellows as Shephard was unable to continue which made way for Kaszola who was instrumental in the opening goal. An excellent run down the left before finding Wright in the box who calmly slotted home is first competitive goal this season.

Jordan Bastin would always want to prove his worth against his former club and the second half caused the Yellows all sorts of problems at the back. Just before the hour mark he burst down the right before finding Mccootie who drilled his shot into the bottom corner to equalise for the Seagulls. Minutes later he would again be a thorn in our side, this time found in all sorts of space, shooting at Williams near post but an equally good save denied the lead.

A thunderbolt strike from Scott Laird would give the Seagulls the lead on 70 minutes. Bastin holding up the ball before finding Laird on the edge of the box before drilling it into the top corner! Both sides continued to create chances and with a few minutes to go, the hosts getting three points were looking likely until Morison’s shot was followed up and tapped in by Matt Wright for his second of the afternoon.

Tiverton’s hard fought comeback was almost undone in the dying seconds as Lloyd Humphries was allowed to drive forward and his strike firing back off the post before being cleared and the referee blowing his final whistle being blown to confirm the points shared. The Yellows will now prepare for Saturday as they enter the FA Cup First Round Qualifying away against fellow league opponents; Salisbury FC.
